At the very end of our trip to Africa, we returned to Nairobi to catch a flight back to the US. We had an extra day there, so we booked a day trip to Ol Pejeta Sanctuary, where you can find the last of the Northern White Rhinos. There are currently only two left in existence and they are cared for at the sanctuary.
Our first stop in the park was to meet & feed the last two northern white rhinos, plus their other rhino friend. We weren’t allowed out of the car, but the came close enough that we could touch them. It was really neat to see them so close.
After our little meet & greet, we met another rhino named Baraka. He is a blind rhino that lives in the sanctuary.
Next, we stopped at the memorial for rhinos who passed away. Most were tragically from poaching. It was very sad to see.
Afterwards, we had a little time before lunch, so we did a mini game drive. Saw some of the other animals that live within the sanctuary.
Then it was lunch. The lunch spot was cool because it had a little watering hole next to the building. As you ate, you could watch animals come and go.
After lunch, we stopped at the chimp rescue part of the sanctuary. They have been to rescue chimps from pet markets and other captivity. They are unable to be released back into the wild, but they are at least given a safe space for them to live in and be cared for there.
Ran into some giraffes on the way out of the park! They’re always a favorite for me.
Bonus: On the way back to Nairobi, we stopped to stand on the equator!
