In 2019, we toured around Africa for 3 weeks. One of the stops along the way was to Victoria Falls, from both Zambia and Zimbabwe. We spent 4 days around that area, and here’s what we did!
Day 1:
We had a bit of flight drama leaving Rwanda (flight delays… there’s always one on every trip), but we eventually make it to Zimbabwe. It was fairly late in the day, so we checked into our hotel and then grabbed some dinner. We found a place just down the street from the hotel where Ali was able to try wildebeast and impala. Then we just walked around the small town for a bit.
Day 2:
For our second day, we booked a safari and boat ride in Chobe National Park in Botswana (sneaking in an extra country on our trip). We started our day with a pickup from the meetup spot in town. We drove to the park, seeing some animals along the way.
For the first part of the day, we did our boat tour. Seeing the animals from the water was actually something new we didn’t do on our 7 day safari earlier. We got to see quite a lot of hippos.
Then we stopped at a lodge in the park for a nice buffet lunch.
After lunch, we hopped into some safari vehicles for the land portion of the safari.
At one point, we startled this elephant and he started to get a bit aggressive at us, but luckily, he eventually just ran off to join the other elephants.
The safari ride left me with quite the hairdo.
Afterwards, we were dropped back near the hotel. We found ourselves a new spot for dinner, where Ali got to try warthog.
Day 3:
The morning of day 3, we spent walking around Victoria Falls. Be prepared to get soaked just from walking near the mist of the falls. By the time we got back to the hotel, we were drenched.
Later, we crossed boarder into Zambia, and checked into our new hotel.
Then it was time for our Microflight! We got to see the falls from the sky! And the timing was perfect because it started raining right after we finished.
Day 4:
The last day, we got to go to Victoria Island and swim in the Angels Pool at edge of Victoria Falls. We were a bit worried it would be cancelled because it had been pouring all night, but, luckily, we were still okay to go! We took a boat to a little island at the edge of the falls. We were given time to change into our swim gear and then we all walked to one of the natural pools at the edge of the falls. This was terrifying for me. Ali was having a blast, I was having a panic attack. But we did get a lovely breakfast afterwards. The best porridge I’ve ever eaten.
Then we checked out of the hotel and stopped for some lunch. Ali (a.k.a. Mr Must-Try-Every-Food-On-The-Planet) ate some grubs. And then we made our way to the airport, to once again return to Nairobi for the last part of our vacation.
