Lima, Peru
After our quick stop in Mexico City, we ventured on to Peru! Our first and last stop of the trip was Lima. We spent about 3 days there, all together: one day at the start, before we leave for Cusco, and 2 days at the end of the trip, before we headed home.
Day 1:
We arrived in Lima late the night before, so day 1 was our first full day of exploring the city. Our first stop of the day was the Basilica Cathedral de Lima, which, along with the usual cathedral sights, included the remains of Pizarro and some skeleton filled crypts.
After the cathedral, we picked up a quick snack of churros! These were unlike the churros we usually see. They were more like twisted dough instead of a batter that is poured directly into the oil. Plus they were filled with yummy fillings.
After our little break, we stopped at the Basilica & Convent of San Francisco. We grabbed a few photos in the cathedral, but the convent tour was photo free. I would still recommend people check it out! There was a lot of nice things to see inside.
Lunch break! I tried the trout and Ali tried a sample plate of Peruvian food.
After lunch, we hopped in an Uber and headed to the Larco Museum. It had a really nice collection of pre-columbian art and artifacts.
And then we headed back to the hotel to pack to fly to Cusco in the morning.
Day 2:
Day 2 in Lima actually happened 6 days later, after a detour to Cusco and Machu Picchu. We flew back in the morning, and after checking into the hotel, we grabbed a quick bite at a restaurant nearby. At this point in the trip, we were branching away from traditional Peruvian food, and for this meal, had Dalmatian cuisine instead. And it was very delicious.
After our lunch, we journeyed to the MALI Museum (aka the Museo de Arte de Lima).
Still fairly full from lunch, for dinner we just had a small bite and some dessert at a restaurant near the hotel.
Day 3:
Our last day in Lima and our last day for the whole trip. Our flight back home was later that evening. After getting to finally sleep in for a bit, we had a lovely breakfast at the hotel.
Then we headed to the Casa de Aliaga for a tour. The casa is a historic, colonial style house, built for one of the founding families of Peru. You can only visit with a tour because the family still lives in part of the house.
After the tour, we made a quick stop at the Basilica and Convent of Santo Domingo.
Then, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to grab more churros! We decided to walk around a bit while we enjoyed them.
After our snack, we traveled back to where the hotel was and walked along the boardwalk area to see the coast.
Then we grabbed lunch at an Italian restaurant nearby.
Then it was time to head to the airport, as our trip had come to an end and our first trip to South America was a super success!
